Chapter Nine

Life’s a peach…but it can also be (berry) sweet.

Dahlia picked at another take-out dinner, sliding the occasional noodle to Coco, who was sitting patiently at her feet. Typically, chatting with her father over a meal would be welcome, but a stony silence still shrouded them. They’d worked side by side for the remainder of the day, neither saying a word about their argument or the appearance of Tristan. The car ride home had been much of the same. Her dad had focused on the road, while she pretended to be very interested in the scenery around them. Not that it wasn’t a pretty city with its artisan shops and eclectic local flair.

She just hadn’t been able to enjoy it. There was so much on her mind it was like being torn in several different directions. Coco nudged her knee. The dog was always perceptive to her emotions. She reached down and stroked her bristly fur, more to comfort herself than anything. Processing what Tristan said about a relationship and coming clean to her father about all her recent secrets were warring for space inside her brain. For whatever reason, when she tried open her mouth to tell him that Tristan also owned the building where they were currently residing, her carefully planned speech dissolved in her throat.

Better to get it over and done with than to keep procrastinating. She pressed her lips together and placed her fork down. She rested one palm flat against Coco’s shoulder, drawing strength from her canine companion. “We should talk about Tristan.”

Her father’s posture stiffened, and Coco stilled beneath her hand. “We should.” The to-go box rustled against the table as he pushed his food away. “You didn’t seem surprised to see him.”

She blew out a breath. “I wasn’t sure we’d even run into him.”

“How did you know he’d be anywhere near the market?” His expression was pinched as he asked. “That he lived in Northampton of all places?”

Coco pushed closer into the side of her leg, nearly sliding her off the chair. She sensed the tension blooming. “He owns the convention center where the market is held.”

“Did you run into him before the show and decide not to tell me?” Dad shook his head, eyes narrowed, looking more confused by the second.

Oh, this was so not good. There were reasons she’d kept Tristan’s existence and proximity a secret, probably several, but she couldn’t grasp ahold of a single one. “When I inquired about the apartment, I was speaking with a nice woman named Doris. Every interaction was done through her, but when I came to pick up the keys it was Tristan who showed up for the appointment.”

The way he gripped the edge of the table wasn’t lost on her. “What are you saying, Dahlia?”

She released a long, pent-up breath. “That Tristan owns this building, just like he does the one where the Spring Six is located each year.” She continued to run her fingers through Coco’s short fur.

“You’ve known that long? Have
